Wow, I did not expect this, but maybe the prospect for and presence of a couple of thousand Native American armed services veterans at Standing Rock, there to support the protest, had an impact on the US Army Corps of Engineers decision to halt construction of the pipeline. This does not mean that the pipeline will be permanently stopped, but it seems to signal that Native American voices have been heard and that there may have to be serious discussions and considerations for moving the pipeline route away from tribal lands, including those lands that are the subject of ongoing disputes. On the other hand, the next administration could come in in January and overturn this decision. Let’s see what happens.
